Mahamuni Paya

The Mahamuni Paya houses the highly venerated image with the same name. The temple is a beautiful building worthy of the image which is possibly as old as 19 or 20 centuries. The Burmese captured it in 1784 after a victory over Rakhaing and from that moment on is has been plastered with gold leaves, making it 14 to 15 centimeter thicker. Devotees come and go continously, it is impressive to see how very much alive Buddhism is in all layers of society.
